A double elimination bracket gives every team two lives. Teams start in the winners bracket (upper bracket); a first loss drops them into the losers bracket (lower bracket) instead of eliminating them. A second loss — anywhere — ends their run.
The last team standing in the winners bracket and the champion of the losers bracket meet in the grand final. Because the winners bracket finalist has never lost, most rulesets play a bracket reset: if the losers bracket champion wins the first grand final match, a rematch is played. This generator handles the reset automatically.
The winners bracket runs like a single elimination tournament. After each winners bracket round, the losers “drop down” into a specific round of the losers bracket, where they face survivors of earlier lower-bracket rounds.
Drops are cross-placed so that a team dropping from winners round 2 meets a team that lost earlier in a different part of the bracket, avoiding immediate rematches wherever the structure allows. The losers bracket has roughly twice as many rounds as the winners bracket because it absorbs both its own losers and the winners bracket drops.
For N teams, a double elimination needs 2N − 2 matches, or 2N − 1 if the bracket reset is played:
| Teams | Winners rounds | Losers rounds | Matches |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 | 2 | 6 (7 with reset) |
| 8 | 3 | 4 | 14 (15 with reset) |
| 16 | 4 | 6 | 30 (31 with reset) |
| 32 | 5 | 8 | 62 (63 with reset) |
Double elimination is the standard for esports events, chess and fighting-game tournaments, and any competition where a single bad game should not end a favorite’s chances. It costs roughly twice as many matches as single elimination, so it fits best when you have enough time or play matches in parallel.
For a faster event, use the single elimination bracket generator. To guarantee every team multiple games in large fields without a huge bracket, try the Swiss system or a round robin schedule.
